Over 2,000 natural sandstone arches exist in the park, as well as a variety of other unique geological formations. The park contains the highest density of natural arches in the world. It lies above an underground salt bed, which is the main cause of the formation of the arches, spires, balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths. The sea that consumed the area eventually evaporated 300 million years ago.
