The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469 miles along the crests of the Southern Appalachians and links two national parks: Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. In 1933, plans to build this highway as a public works project was approved. After working through the Great Depression with 170 miles open to travel, World War II began with 160 miles left under construction. This scenic route was finally opened in 1987, 54 years after initial approval.
