The 92,000-acre park consists of two separate areas, the Tucson Mountain District and the Rincon Mountain District, that preserve Sonoran Desert landscapes, fauna, and flora, including the giant saguaro cactus. Saguaros grow exceptionally slow. The first arm of a saguaro appears when the cactus is between 50 and 100 years old. Saguaros may live as long as 200 years. A mature saguaro may grow up to 60 ft. tall and weigh up to 4,800 pounds. The total number of saguaros in the park is estimated at 1.8 million.
